Spring sports update

A few words to pass along regarding some of the teams appearing on JumboCast this spring...

Although the seasons for both of the Tufts lacrosse teams ended sooner than expected, JumboCast would like to congratulate women's head coach Carol Rappoli and men's head coach Mike Daly for getting their respective clubs into the NESCAC tournament and earning the right to host a first round game.

We would also like to wish the best to softball head coach Cheryl Milligan and baseball coach John Casey whose teams will also be competing in their sports' upcoming NESCAC tournaments. Be sure to check back here regarding possible webcasts of those tournament games.

Due to a technical issue with the Tufts Wireless Network coverage at the Lower Athletic Fields, JumboCast has been unable to offer live webcasts of spring events thus far. However, we are making every effort to work with Tufts University IT Services and get the capability back as soon as possible.

In the meantime, we will be uploading games to the archive server as soon as they are completed for your viewing enjoyment. We have recently added the Tufts Softball games from April 5, 2008. They can be found in the Archives.

Basketball Coverage

The Tufts Women's Basketball team (19-2, 5-2 NESCAC) will attempt to make school history this weekend as they try for their first-ever 20-win season. Standing in their way tonight is perennially tough Bowdoin (17-5, 6-1), the defending seven-time NESCAC tournament champions who are once again atop the conference standings. If the Jumbos can pull out a win over the Polar Bears it will be their first this decade against their NESCAC rival, having not defeated them since December of 1994.

JumboCast is proud to bring you exclusive coverage of tonight’s important contest as well as tomorrow’s game versus Colby, as Coach Berube’s squad is involved in a very tight battle for conference tournament seeding. Every win counts on this final weekend of the NESCAC regular season, so make sure to click on the links for live coverage right here only on JumboCast.

We also hope you'll continue checking this page for further updates of upcoming NESCAC tournament coverage.

Change of the seasons

Congratulations to the Tufts field hockey team for their first NCAA tournament win in school history this week, an impressive win over New England College. The Jumbos will next play Saturday morning in Salisbury, MD against a Sea Gulls program bidding for their fourth national championship in the last five years. All of us at JumboCast wish Tina McDavitt's team the best as they prepare for their second-round matchup.

Tufts football won't be participating in the NCAAs, but coach Bill Samko's squad does have a chance to claim a share of the NESCAC football crown and finish with the most wins since 2001 when they host Middlebury College in their regular season finale Saturday. It's also Seniors Day at Zimman Field, which is always an emotional day for all involved. JumboCast is pleased to present live coverage of this gridiron clash.

And with the winter sports season quickly approaching, please stay tuned for more news on this page regarding the upcoming schedule of webcasts. As always, your support of JumboCast is greatly appreciated.

Still Having Those April Showers

*NOTE* Friday's Softball game has been postponed due to the weather.

The month is almost over, but Mother Nature is back with a vengence with more rain. Please bear with us this busy weekend as we wade through the Friday precipitation and Saturday's major Spring Fling Concert event on Campus.

Also, note that JumboCast will carry Saturday's men's lacrosse showdown with Middlebury, but that it will be audio-only. Thanks.

Technical Difficulties

Ladies and Gentleman,

Due to technical difficulties at Bello Field, we are unable to present live coverage of the Bates vs. Tufts Men's Lacrosse game. The game will be available in the archives. We are working to ensure that everything will run smoothly for the remainder of the season.

Men's lax this weekend on JumboCast

NOTE: Last Friday's baseball game complete with bonus camera coverage is now available in the JumboCast archives.

Join us on Saturday to watch the men's lacrosse team attempt to bounce back from their first NESCAC loss of the season (at Williams) as they host Bates at 1:00. If Tufts wins their final three conference games they will clinch their first NESCAC regular season title, earn a first round bye and host the NESCAC tournament semifinals and finals on May 5 & 6.

Be forewarned of the Clem McNally factor: the Jumbos are 9-0 when he scores in a game this year, 0-2 when he doesn't. And Tufts' top goal scorer found the back of the net 11 times in two games against the Bobcats as a freshman last year.

Tuesday, April 3, 2007
Thanks!

JumboCast would like to thank everyone who viewed our Tufts-WNEC men's lacrosse webcast and remind you that there are plenty of live games coming up throughout the month of April. Please click on our schedule page for all the dates and teams involved.

Battle of the Unbeatens

The first full week of JumboCast's spring sports coverage kicks off with an exciting men's lacrosse matchup featuring two top ten-ranked and undefeated teams, #5 Tufts University (6-0) hosting #8 Western New England College (7-0). Join us tonight at 7:00pm for exclusive coverage of this game to help determine Massachusetts Division III men's lax supremacy, then come back this weekend for more men's lacrosse and baseball action here on JumboCast.

No JumboCast this weekend

Unfortunately, the NESCAC has contracted an independent company to webcast the Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. As a result, we do not have the rights nor the permission to webcast for our Tufts viewers. Information on the webcasts can be found at the NESCAC home page.

JumboCast, however, is going to help D3Cast.com provide coverage of the Men's Basketball tournament.

Thank you for your viewership this Winter Season. We hope you will join us when we pick up once again for the Spring Sports Season.

Weekend Webcasts

To all JumboCast viewers,

We've tentatively lined up Men's and Women's Soccer games on Saturday, with an eye towards the first round NESCAC Tournament matches on Sunday. The outcome of Saturday's games will determine the sites and seedings for the tournament. So, once we find out more information, we'll keep you posted right here on our website.

However, this weekend calls for rain and otherwise blistery weather. While the teams might still play, our electronic equipment would not survive those conditions. Again, keep posted to the website for the latest news.

JumboCast Joins the Fight Against Pancreatic Cancer

To all viewers and JumboCast fans:

JumboCast is taking part in a Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Walk on Sunday, October 15, 2006. This event will help raise funding and insight to a very deadly disease. In 2006, the American Cancer Society predicts that out of the 33,000 diagnosed cases of Pancreatic Cancer, 96% of them will be fatal within a year. This makes it the highest percentage of cancer deaths, with it being the #4 leading killer out of all cancers in the United States.

In taking an initiative, JumboCast is partnering with the Massachusettes General Hospital to march in the event. If you would like to learn more about the walk, please visit the Team MGH web page.

Or, visit the Lustgarten Foundation's web page for more information about the event itself.

Any contributions to support the JumboCast team or to benefit the cause will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Steve Poon

We're glad to have you join us for today's game! If this is your first JumboCast webcast — or just your first time watching us this fall — be aware that we are now streaming in Windows Media. Complete setup instructions are here, and support tips are here.

If you encounter an issue where your screen goes green and flips upside down, that is a known Windows Media Player 10 issue that is described on the support page. Or maybe we just dropped the camera on the field.

Either way, enjoy the webcast!

JumboCast Serves Up the Fall Season

Ladies and gentlemen, it is my honor to officially announce the beginning of the Fall Webcasting season for Tufts University. We begin our coverage with Friday Night Volleyball, then move to the gridiron on Saturday with Football.

Though you can still expect the same game coverage that we have had in the past, plus playoffs, there are some new changes here at JumboCast. Most notably, we have switched to Windows Media as our streaming format, moving away from the Real formats we used in the past.

For Windows users, you should have Windows Media Player pre-installed. If you are a Mac user, check out our setup page here to install the necessary programs to get you up and running.

As always, we hope that you enjoy what we as undergraduates deliver in support of our fellow student-athletes. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email GM@jumbocast.com

Thank you.

Jumbos eliminated in NESCAC Baseball title game

Congratulations to the Tufts baseball team, who fought hard throughout the weekend, but nobody in Maine had an answer for the Middlebury Panthers, who win their first NESCAC baseball championship with an 8-1 win over the Jumbos this afternoon.

The Rain in Maine...

...plain fell on just about everything, but a little less so on (irony!) Waterville, and the Jumbos started to play their first-round NESCAC baseball tournament game there, until the weather forced a halt to play with the Jumbos trailing, 3-0, in the top of the third inning. Check back here tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. for updates on the schedule for the rest of the tournament.

Truly an 'Instant Classic'

Twelve hours later, it doesn't hurt any less for Tufts fans. And Amherst fans this morning breathe another sigh of relief.

Last night's game was, without question, one of the most memorable experiences I've had in over twenty years of watching and covering Tufts basketball. The Jumbos played magnificently, but Amherst responded at every turn, and Andrew Olson's jaw-dropping three (they are already calling it "The Shot" at Amherst) allowed the Lord Jeffs to wriggle off the hook, and continue their march.

To the Jeffs, we say congratulations — represent the NESCAC well with three more wins.

To the Jumbos, whose carriage finally turned back into a pumpkin late last night, we salute you for an amazing season — the most wins in any season in Tufts basketball history — and look forward to next year.

To my colleagues on the JumboCast crew last night: you all did an amazing job, and we should be proud of the fantastic webcast we presented. It was an honor to work with you all.

And to our JumboCast audience, we say thank you for sharing the night with us — we hope we were able to give you a sense of the feeling inside LeFrak Gym last night. More than ever, we appreciate your support of JumboCast — it was a privilege to bring you that game last night.

The game itself will be in the JumboCast archives at around 2 p.m. EST this afternoon; a clip of The Shot is available to stream here or as a high-quality AVI to download (103MB) here (Windows users; right-click, select 'Save Target As...').

Thanks again to everyone who made last night unforgettable.

-Steve Clay

The Jumbos March Forth!

JumboCast extends its congratulations to the Men's Basketball team for their NCAA Second Round victory over Cortland State University on Saturday, advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time in Tufts hoops history. They'll be in Amherst on Friday night. And so will we.

However, as a fully student-run organization, JumboCast has to deal with the same issues that many of the athletes face: classes and the reality of college. Staff members donate their time away from the books and classes to help bring coverage of the games, all on a voluntary basis. If viewers would like to support JumboCast in any way, volunteering, financially, or just moral support, send an email to gm@jumbocast.com.

For those interested, check out Cole Liberator's column about JumboCast in the March 6, 2006 edition of the Tufts Daily, located right here.

Have a great day, and LET'S GO JUMBOS!

NCAA first/second round webcast

As Tufts Basketball continues their sensational season, JumboCast is honored to be part of the team's coverage. After their NCAA first round victory, the Jumbos take on Cortland State on Saturday, at 7PM. You can catch that action LIVE here on JumboCast. And once again, the entire staff would like to thank all of our viewers for their continued support.

Folks, for over four years, we at JumboCast have prided ourselves on ignoring our other life responsibilities and dropping everything to webcast Tufts athletics events.

And once again, it appears that a mere five-and-a-half hour trip is merely a minor annoyance in the cause of Getting Things Done.

So it looks pretty good at this point that — leaving aside for the moment the question of why THREE Boston-area teams are being sent to Cortland, NY for a regional — JumboCast should be able to bring you at least audio of the first (and hopefully, second) round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championships (for which the bracket is here).

It is still, though, an excellent time to volunteer to help out at JumboCast by emailing gm@jumbocast.com.

You can also revisit one of the great games in the Jumbos' 2005 NCAA run, as JumboCast's webcast of the Oneonta St. sectional final game is now up in the archives.

2005 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship update

Hi, folks... many of you are probably wondering if you can follow the Jumbos in Greensboro on JumboCast this Thanksgiving weekend, and the answer is (we're always equivocating!) a qualified yes.

At this writing, JumboCast is probably not making the trip to webcast the games, but the games will be webcast, and we hope to be able to provide a direct link to those webcasts for you. Note that Friday's semi-final webcast will be audio only, but that the championship game would be an audio/video webcast.

Thanks again to all of you for your support of JumboCast, and for helping us set a new all-time webcast audience record on Sunday!

And from all of us at JumboCast, best wishes for a very satisfying and safe Thanksgiving holiday.

Congratulations to Women's Soccer for advancing to the NCAA Final Four in Greensboro, NC! Please check the JumboCast webpage for updates during the Thanksgiving Holiday. It is a busy time for us all, but as usual, we strive to bring you as many Tufts games as possible.

Weekend's webcasts

Hi folks... we'll have plenty of Tufts action for you on JumboCast this weekend, including our first-ever triplecast for you on Saturday, with women's soccer at 11, football at 12:30, and volleyball at 3:30. Please note, however, that the Tufts-Colby football game will be audio-only — the rest of the webcasts will be video webcasts. Thanks as always for your support of JumboCast, and enjoy the weekend's webcasts!

Hi folks... we hope you've been enjoying the programming on JumboCast so far this fall. As always, no matter what your affiliation or connection to our webcasts is, we could definitely use your help.

If you're a Tufts student, or a Boston-area alum who's interested in participating in our webcasts, please see our join us! page.

If you're a grateful alum, parent or financier (did I say that out loud?), contributions to JumboCast are always welcome (especially with the price of gas in New England this fall!). See our

Thanks to all of you for your interest in JumboCast!

Men's Soccer archive now available

The Tufts/Salve men's soccer game is in the archives now, with the following caveats: it's been encoded at a larger size and bit rate than normal, but depending on your download speed and RealPlayer settings, you may have problems getting the stream at the higher rate (down in the bottom bar, it’ll either say something like "35Kbps", or something a lot higher – you can try and force your settings in RealPlayer to be higher in Tools/Preferences/Connection, and set the "Normal" setting to “DSL/Cable 512Kbps”).

Also, we were without a working tripod in the first half, and had to wind up trying to hold the camera by hand, which did NOT work well (it’s better for the second half, but unfortunately for the Jumbos, so was Salve).

Soccer Webcasts CANCELLED / Volleyball Archives

Those of you who are familiar with the JumboCast setup know that we have to scramble whenever inclement weather interferes with (or has a very high chance of interfering with) our outdoor webcasts.

Given that the 5:15 p.m. NWS forecast calls for the Medford/Somerville area to receive at least a significant amount of rain from the remnants of Trpoical Storm Ophelia, we are unfortunately cancelling our soccer webcasts for Saturday. We look forward to bringing you more men's and women's soccer action on JumboCast in the near future.

On an unrelated note, the Williams and Bates volleyball matches are in the JumboCast archives now, and last Friday's matches will follow over the weekend.

Hope you enjoy the archives!

Last Night's (And This Afternoon's) Volleyball

Hi folks... to those of you who tried to watch last night as we kicked off the 2005-06 season at the Williams Volleyball Invitational, we apologize -- a bad web site bug prevented you from from seeing the links. We have fixed the problem, should be able to get last night's streams into the archive by tonight, and will have both matches for you today, live, from Williams. Our apologies for the inconvenience, but we think you're going to like what you see...

On a side note, Bates and Lasell College took a match into 5 games, so the start time for the Tufts-Bates game will be pushed back to approximately 1:30 PM.

Welcome Class of 2009!

All of us at JumboCast would like to welcome the Class of 2009 to the Hill! We'd also like to let you know that JumboCast will be starting its fall webcast schedule soon, and we could really use your help on the JumboCast team. We need camera operators, directors, and play-by-play and color announcers. Find out more at the 'join the team!' page, or send an email to sbc@jumbocast.com for more information. Again, welcome to Tufts, from your friends at JumboCast.

Thanks To All For Another Great Year

As we come to the end of another academic year, all of us at JumboCast would like to say thanks to the many folks who watched and listened to (and worked on!) our webcasts, and especially to those who made contributions to JumboCast during the 2004-05 season. We've enjoyed bringing you webcasts on JumboCast, and we hope to be able to return for the 2005-06 year better than ever.

As a final note, we do know that many of our live streams from the calendar year 2005 are not yet in the archives, and now that our webcast schedule is over, we will begin to make sure that as many of these webcasts as possible get into the archives. Thanks again for your support.

Tufts Baseball @ NESCACs This Weekend

Join us at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 13th for a half-hour preview of the 2004 NESCAC Baseball Tournament, live from Amherst College before Game 1, with Tufts taking on the host Jeffs at 3 p.m..

Then stay with us for coverage of Tufts baseball as they try to repeat their 2002 NESCAC championship by winning this year's tournament at Amherst. We'll have live coverage of all of the Tufts games in the tournament, so join us. Because there's no way the weather could be lousy for another weekend, is there? I said, is there?

Softball Postponed Until Sunday

All of the remaining games in the 2005 NESCAC Softball Tournament have been rescheduled for Sunday, May 8 on the campus of Wheaton College in Norton, MA.

JumboCast will attempt to continue its full coverage, but the live webcasts of Sunday's game are quite likely to be audio-only. Thanks for your understanding.

While you're waiting, why not go back into the archives and watch the two terrific games from yesterday?

JumboCast To Present 2005 NESCAC Softball Tournament

JumboCast is pleased to announce that it will present live audio and video of the entire 2005 NESCAC Softball Tournament from Spicer Field at Tufts University. We'll have former NESCAC players and coaches joining us to bring you all the action between Tufts, Trinity, Williams and Middlebury — with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line! For more info on the tournament, see the NESCAC softball championship page.

JumboCast's webcast of Tufts baseball vs. Eastern Connecticut will not happen this afternoon, primarily because the game has been rescheduled until tomorrow.

Be The First To Know — Catch Saturday's SportsChat!

All four of the teams that JumboCast has covered this spring — baseball, softball and men's and women's lacrosse — could qualify for their respective NESCAC tournaments Saturday afternoon. And with less than 24 hours before the end of Saturday's lacrosse games and the start of the lacrosse tournaments on Sunday, you'll need instantaneous info to know who made it, and who's playing where!

We'll give it all to you on SportsChat, live from the athletic offices on Saturday. We'll recap all the scores for you, and run all the permutations, so you don't have to. The only tiebreaker we can't conclusively resolve is the coin flip! So join us on SportsChat at 3:30 p.m., and we'll get you up-to-date!

Be A Part Of JumboCast With Advertising Or Sponsorship Opportunities!

Hi, all... as many of you know, JumboCast is not formally financially supported by Tufts, and that means we often need to scramble to obtain the funding we need to present our live audio and video webcasts of Tufts athletics events. But now, there's a way for you to help us, and to take advantage of the ever-growing JumboCast audience to get your message out, or simply to say 'thank you' for the great service that JumboCast provides. Click here to find out more, and from all of us at JumboCast, thank you!

A silver lining!

The late forecast for Saturday morning and afternoon called for dreary but dry conditions, and JumboCast had planned to bring you two lacrosse webcasts. We even started streaming the women's game, but unfortunately Mother Nature had other ideas and abruptly forced us off the air. Again our apologies for those looking for lacrosse action this afternoon--it may say light rain on the weather.com graphic, but we at JumboCast beg to differ!

However, the postponement of Tufts baseball at Trinity to Sunday afternoon will allow us to scramble to Hartford, CT and bring you both games of the all-important NESCAC East doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. Um, weather permitting, that is...

No Softball Webcast Today

Folks, we always feel terrible whenever we have to cancel a webcast, but especially on a beautiful 80-degree day in the Boston area. Due to various logistical annoyances, JumboCast will be unable to bring you the Tufts-Brandeis softball game today, but we're very much looking forward to the possibility of seeing the Jumbos in the NESCAC tournament beginning on May 6. Again, we apologize, and we thank you for your continued interest in JumboCast.

Saturday, April 2, 2005
No Webcasts Today

Not a huge surprise, with the massive rain in the forecast for the Medford area, but JumboCast will be unable to present any webcasts today. We apologize to those of you who were looking forward to them.

Also, don't forget to set your clocks ahead tonight, or you'll be as out of it as those two balls Bryan McDavitt hit yesterday!

Spring is Here! (Well, At Least At JumboCast.)

If Mother Nature and technology allow, JumboCast is pleased to begin coverage of the spring sports season this Wednesday with exciting men's lacrosse action featuring two top-20-ranked D-3 teams. Also included on the 2005 spring schedule are baseball, softball, and women's lacrosse webcasts.

That's the good news. The bad news is that we're still waiting for Computer Services at Tufts to enable our wireless access for the lower fields at Tufts. This includes the baseball and softball fields, as well as the new Bello Field, which is where most of the lacrosse games this spring will take place. Without this infrastructure in place, almost all of the webcasts on the schedule page will not be available live, and will instead be "archive-only" webcasts; that is, the streams will appear in the archives about an hour after the game has ended.

We'll keep you updated on this — thanks for your understanding.

Winter Is Over! (Well, At Least At JumboCast.)

JumboCast's 2004-05 winter webcast season has concluded, and we'd like that thank everybody who participated in, watched and supported our webcasts this winter. Our spring schedule will be up soon, but in the meantime, it's never too late to find out more about helping out at JumboCast, supporting JumboCast financially, or buying JumboCast swag. Thanks again, and we'll see you soon!

Tournament Time -- Double-Barrelled Action!

Network connectivity permitting (sometimes I think that should be our motto), JumboCast will be webcasting both the men's basketball NESCAC semi-final vs. Bates (from Amherst) tomorrow afternoon, as well as the men's hockey first round tournament game at Trinity. If all goes well, you can bring them up side-by-side, and let the cacophony of succulent play-by-play just wash right over you.

Or not.

If basketball wins on Saturday, we'll have Sunday afternoon's final for you as well, of course.

Enjoy!

About The Archives

One of the things we've always been proudest about at JumboCast is that, since our first men's basketball audio webcast back in January 2002, almost every single one of our webcasts has been preserved and available for immediate access in the JumboCast archives.

This winter has been a difficult one for JumboCast, and this is especially true from the standpoint of the archives. Many of our webcasts are currently not — and some will never be — available in the archive. There are a number of technical reasons for this, some of which are detailed in the next news item on the news page.

The inability to retain the results of our extremely hard work in the JumboCast archives is — believe me — just as distressing to us at JumboCast as it is to those of you who wish to revisit these webcasts. We are doing everything we can to solve these problems, and expect them to be resolved soon, during which time we appreciate your patience and understanding, and your support of JumboCast.

Steve Clay
JumboCast Founder and General Manager

P.S. No matter how mad we get at our computers, we never get this mad. (Flash required)

More Detail About The Archives

There are several ways that JumboCast webcasts get into the archives. Each has had different problems lately.

1. The Tufts streaming media server automatically archives them at the completion of the live webcast. This is the main method by which we have archived our webcasts since early 2002. Unfortunately, during a recent upgrade (ironically) to this server, this feature has been disabled. We are currently working with Information Technology Services at Tufts to have this setting re-enabled, at which point the automatic archiving process will begin again.

2. JumboCast keeps a copy of the webcast on the laptop that creates the stream. This, also, has been a fine method to retain backup files, and put them on the archive server whenever method 1 isn't working. However, our laptop is now two-and-a-half years old, and despite our tender loving care and protection, has been exposed to the worst of New England's rain, cold, and infield dirt. It is, unfortunately, prone to crashing — and likes to do so at the worst possible times. Lately, this has happened a few times at the end of webcasts, when the locally-saved filed is being written. Unfortunately, this causes the locally-saved file to be lost, and the file is not recoverable under these circumstances.

3. JumboCast could keep a completely separate 'aircheck' of each webcast, and then could re-encode it (potentially at higher bitrates for better-quality viewing) for the archives. Note the use of the world 'could' there. This is not something we currently do, due to equipment, staff and time limitations (in other words: we don't have enough of the aforementioned three things), but something we're going to have to look at doing in the immediate future.

Just to reiterate — our completed webcasts are extremely important to us at JumboCast, and we understand the necessity of preserving them for days, weeks and years to come. Thanks again for hanging in there with us while we find the best ways to do that.

We interrupt your regular Tufts Jumbos news...

Understanding that many Tufts students and alumni have New England roots, there is much rejoicing across the region as the Boston Red Sox have finally vanquished their longtime rivals from Gotham, making baseball history in the process by rallying from a 0-3 deficit. The Sox have now won their eleventh American League pennant with a chance to win their first World Series since...well, apparently it's been awhile.

Bringing the subject back to JumboCast, be sure to check out Saturday's football webcast against Williams College (Yankees owner George Steinbrenner is an Eph alum), as the Jumbos try to defeat the Ephmen on the gridiron for the first time since 1986, which also happens to be the last time the Sox played in the Fall Classic.

Anyone Want To Volunteer As 'JumboCast Umbrella Holders'?

Sorry for another late cancellation, folks — the radar in the Medford area makes it seem quite likely there'll be showers during this afternoon's field hockey game, and while that doesn't affect the absorbent Bello Field at all, it's not quite as good on thousands of dollars of audio and video and computer equipment that would be unprotected in our setup at the field. So we have to apologize once again, and let you know that we'll be adding more field hockey webcasts as soon as we are able.

Hey Aaron, Next Time I Say, "We'll Just Merge The Audio And Video Later," Smack Me

An audio and video stream from the first half of Saturday's football game at Bowdoin is available here. The rest is coming. Sloooowly.

Sometimes, Just Getting It Into The Archive Is A Distinguished Achievement

JumboCast's webcast of the 2004 Distinguished Achievement Award ceremony is now available in the archive for your enjoyment. (The first few folks who spot the graphics error in the webcast will get a special JumboCast prize.) Also, be sure and check out our interview with Tom Penders at halftime of the Bates football game. (It's marked as a highlight in the football stream in the archives.)

More Rain = Less JumboCast

Looks like the remnants of Hurricane Jeanne will wander through Somerville tomorrow afternoon, and so that will significantly hamper our ability to webcast the women's soccer game. We've pulled it off the schedule for now, but if anything changes, we'll still try and get it on for you. Somehow.

Our Apologies For Another Cancellation

(or 'We Really Have Nothing Against Field Hockey, Honestly')

As we gather and train a terrific class of new JumboCast folks this fall, we unfortunately are running into a few schedule conflcts before we're fully up and ready to go, and to our enormous chagrin and embarrassment, the same sport gets bumped for the second time in a row. We will not be able to webcast the women's field hockey game this afternoon — our sincere apologies to those of you looking forward to seeing the game (or even the new Bello Field). We will be scheduling at least one additional field hockey game this fall; keep an eye on the JumboCast schedule for more info.

This seems like as good as time as any to remind Tufts students, or alumni/ae and other interested parties in the Boston area, that JumboCast is always looking for help to get these games webcasted — see the join JumboCast page for more info.

Downloads are coming!

Many folks have asked about the feasability of downloading archived games to their PCs, to avoid connection issues when viewing an archive, or to be sure they have all the webcasts they're interested in archived securely. We are working on the ability to add a 'Download' link to each webcast in the archives, so that you can tuck these precious files away to your heart's content. More as it becomes available...

JumboCast Archive Update

Hi folks... we know there's been some problems with the availability of some of the archived webcasts, and we apologize for this. It's been one of our goals to keep EVERY webcast that JumboCast has presented available in the archives, and as time goes on, this, naturally, becomes tricker and trickier to do.

We do, however, have a brand-new archive server, which is loaded up with many of our archived webcasts after Fall 2002 (the rest we're still trying to get re-added). Please report any dead archive links to our crack archive replenishment team.

Thanks, as always, for your interest in JumboCast.

NEIBA Webcast Is Up

Hi folks — the NEIBA All-Star Game webcast is up in the archives; we hope you enjoy it. If you're looking for a specific at-bat or moment from a particular player, you may find it helpful to refer to the boxscore and play-by-play from the game. We apologize if we mis-identified (or worse — failed to identify) your favorite player, but with so many late substitutions in the game, all of the staff was scrambling for names and numbers. Again, our apologies.

Stay tuned for more 2003-04 wrapups right here on JumboCast, along with the addition of game 'highlights' links on some of our archived webcasts.

Sorry for the Tape-Delayed Webcasts

We would like to apologize to all our loyal JumboCast viewers (and listeners) for being unable to bring you live streaming webcasts of the Tufts/Colby baseball games. On the plus side, two of the three Jumbos' victories are currently in our archive for your viewing pleasure (tell us what you think of the video courtesy of our new camera!).

Keep an eye on our spring sports schedule as we hope to broadcast some upcoming NESCAC tournament games. Thanks to all those who visit this site for your continued support of JumboCast.

Come Join The Team!

We hope you're enjoying listening to and watching webcasts on JumboCast — the only thing better would be participating in them! If you've ever wanted to try sportscasting, or if any of the behind-the-scenes roles (like audio/video engineering, streaming media, or web design) interest you, then come have fun with us!

Tufts students and Boston-area alums would be the ideal fit, but no matter who you are, if you want to help at JumboCast, we'd love to talk to you! See the joining JumboCast page for more info. Thanks!

P.S. If you fill out the 'contact me' form on the joining JumboCast page, PLEASE include your e-mail address, so we can get in touch with you! (Chad, you too!)

Congratulations, Todd!

On Tuesday night, JumboCast's own Todd Bloniarz was selected as the second winner of the Samuel Adams/NESN Announcer For an Inning Competition! (Must have been all that practice calling Tufts baseball on JumboCast.) Todd will broadcast a half-inning of Tuesday, September 23's Red Sox-Orioles game on NESN.

As a preview, you can hear Todd's dulcet tones this Saturday, as part of the JumboCast team calling the Tufts football season opener against Hamilton, starting at noon ET.

Congrats, Todd! We knew you could do it.

Now, Where Were We?

Welcome back to JumboCast — sorry we disappeared for the weekend. (We didn't do it on purpose.)

We're looking forward to Saturday's football opener at Hamilton (although perhaps not to the trip itself...) — hope you are, too. Join us at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday for the pregame show. Kickoff is at 1 p.m..

(Note: Last Thursday's volleyball webcast will be back in the archives soon.)

Another Season Begins!

Well, that summer flew past, but here at JumboCast, we're excited about the beginning of a new academic and athletics season! The new fall schedule is up, and we'll be adding to it as we go. A few points, quickly:

  • We'd still love to have you help us out on our webcasts this fall — it's fun, doesn't take too much time, and is great experience! Help JumboCast cover all the games and events we're planning for! No experience necessary — just some free time, and we'll do the rest.

  • SportsChat — JumboCast's Tufts sports news and talk show — is on hiatus at the moment, but look for it to return soon! (And as the previous item suggested, if you'd like to help be involved with the regular webcast of a Tufts sports news and talk show, let us know).

  • If you accessed any of our content in 2002-03, we'd still love to hear your feedback in our survey. Thanks!

That's it for now. Look for much more on the JumboCast site this fall, and enjoy the webcasts!

Survey Says...

If you had a chance to watch or listen to any of our 2002-03 JumboCast content, please take a moment to fill out a quick survey with a few questions about how we're doing so far, and how we can improve in the future. I know, I know — surveys are a pain (and there's not even a prize for filling this one out), but all of us at JumboCast would really appreciate the feedback, so that we can continue to bring you Tufts sports programming in the best way possible.

Thanks again for taking a few minutes to fill out the survey.

Mikey Dee, 1962-2003

Those of us at JumboCast who spent time at Tufts' radio station WMFO pay tribute to our former colleague Mikey Dee, who passed away Sunday, July 6th, three-and-a-half years after a devastating brainstem stroke.

Mikey, of course, was the host of the local music show On The Town at WMFO, but we remember fondly his engaging personality, and even his tolerance for being pre-empted by sports programming every once in a while. More info at The Mikey Dee site.

A Sadly Fitting End To An Oft-Interrupted Spring Season

Folks, we apologize for the unavailability of the NEIBA All-Star Game today — there seems to be a problem with the streaming media server at Tufts, which will prevent us from getting this webcast to you. Also, by the time we stopped frantically trying to establish a connection to the Tufts server, both Tufts players were out of the game. (Evan Zupancic went 0-for-1 with a walk and a fielder's choice, and Jon Lee pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning.) Again, we apologize for the technical difficulties. If you're curious, the University Division scored two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 3-2 lead, but the UMass-Lowell's Allen Mottram's two-run single in the bottom of the ninth gave the College Division a 4-3 lead and the win. (They actually kept playing until there were three outs in the ninth, which explains the 5-3 final.)

Baseball All-Star Game Postponed (And Then Moved)

The NEIBA All-Star Game, originally scheduled for Thursday, May 29th, has been rescheduled to Friday, May 30th at noon. We'll still have the game for you on JumboCast — with that oft-used phrase of Spring 2003 — "weather permitting". (Update 5/29/03: The game will be re-located, as well, and will NOT be played at Fenway Park, but at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, RI (home of the Red Sox AAA affiliate).)

Wrapping Up

As the 2002-03 season winds down, we'd like to thank everyone who made the year such a success for JumboCast — all the viewers and listeners of our webcasts, all of the staff who made the webcasts possible, and, of course, the coaches, staff and players involved with Tufts and NESCAC athletics. We've got just a few more webcasts coming up — stay tuned to the schedule for more info!

Tournament(s) Time!

Hi, folks... it's shaping up to be another exciting post-season in Tufts sports. All of us at JumboCast are looking forward to bringing you as much tournament action as we can, continuing with the men's lacrosse NESCAC tournament this weekend. Please understand that we can't be everywhere at this point in time, and that's partially staff-related, so we'd love to have you come help us out! Find out more about getting involved with JumboCast here.

Best of luck to all the Tufts teams in post-season play!

Not One, But TWO Milestones

Two exciting pieces of news for the JumboCast faithful (and heck, even the newcomers). First, tonight *knocks wood*, we'll have our first network connection at an away location, and so we'll be able to bring you audio and video as the men's basketball team takes on the Brandeis Judges. We'll have SportsChat for you at 7 p.m., and the game at 8 p.m.

Then, on Saturday, we'll be presenting the first of our winter season collaborations with Tufts University Television (TUTV) when we join forces to bring you really, really nice video of the men's basketball game vs. Trinity from Cousens Gym. We're really excited about working with TUTV — they're a terrific group of kids who really enjoy what they do. Just like JumboCast. Except for the 'kids' part. :-)

All Fixed!

Thanks for your patience, folks. We'll be back on the web tonight, as the women's basketball team hosts the University of New England.

A Step Back To Take Two Steps Forward

Hi, folks, and happy new year! Unfortunately, the upgrade to the Tufts server we use for our webcasts has left us in a state where we are unable to produce live webcasts at the moment. We are working feverishly to get this resolved, but in the meantime, JumboCast will not be able to bring you the men's basketball game tonight. We apologize for the inconvenience, and certainly hope to be back in business by Saturday afternoon. Stay tuned...

Tuesday, November 26, 2002

Hi, all — sorry it's been so long between news updates. We've just been busy cranking out the webcasts instead. We'd like to welcome you all to the 2002-03 winter schedule, which kicks off tonight, and introduce a few small changes to the website, one of which is the introduction of sponsorship to JumboCast. To find out more about how you can support JumboCast as we grow, check out either our donations page or our advertising page.

Until it finds a better home, our "Introduction to Tufts Sports" video is here. Make sure you've visited the setup page before you view the video.

Thanks, and enjoy the webcasts!

Welcome to Tufts Football on JumboCast!

We'd like to welcome everyone to JumboCast for today's webcast of Tufts' 2002 season opener against Hamilton.

Unfortunately, as of early this morning, it appears that today's game will NOT be simulcast on Tufts' radio WMFO. (Feel free to double-check 91.5 on your FM dial, or wmfo.org, for game-time information.) If you hoped to listen to today's game that way, trust us when we say that we would be as disappointed as you would be if the simulcast does not happen — we have enjoyed bringing you Tufts football on WMFO since 1990, and the interruption of such a long tradition would sadden us immensely.

However, we are pleased to be presenting the game — in much higher fidelity — over JumboCast. Please bear with us, though, should we encounter any problems during the afternoon. Specifically, the media server from which we will present today's game has a fixed number of licenses. Should we get a larger crowd than we expect, some of you may have trouble accessing the stream. If this happens, please send us an e-mail at info@jumbocast.net and let us know. We apologize in advance, and will try and correct this situation for next week's game.

In addition (although it's probably cold comfort if you are unable to listen to the game live), the webcast will appear in the archive section of JumboCast, approximately 2-3 hours after the webcast ends. (A perfect way to spend your Saturday night. :-)

Anyway, thanks for being patient with us, and enjoy today's game!

Fall 2002 Schedule Announced

JumboCast is pleased to announce its fall 2002 schedule. We'll be broadcasting all eight Tufts football games, as well as men's and women's soccer, volleyball and field hockey games. For fans of the other Tufts varsity sports, don't worry — we're hoping to have coaches and players from each sport join us on SportsChat, our weekly talk show.

Introducing JumboCast Classic (Which Probably Needs A Better Name)

Here's the first in a series of rebroadcasts of old Tufts games from the archives. We start off with one of the most memorable wins in recent Tufts sports history: the women's soccer team's victory over Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the 2000 NCAA Division III national semi-finals, in a game played at Tufts on November 18, 2000. The whole broadcast is here, but if you're the kind of person that eats dessert first, you can go right to Lynn Cooper's overtime goal here.

PLEASE NOTE: The original source of this broadcast was an analog telephone line, and so it does not sound as good as many of our JumboCast broadcasts. Please keep this in mind while listening to the game.

Thursday, July 11, 2002

Hope everyone is enjoying his or her summer... we're in the process of determining the fall 2002 JumboCast schedule, which we hope to have finalized in the next six weeks or so. Keep checking back for updates! In the meantime, if you want to relive any of the moments from the JumboCast's first season, check out the archive section.
Come help us out! See how in the contribute section.

Harwich, Here We Come!

JumboCast is pleased to announce that it will carry all of Tufts' games in the 2002 NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional from Harwich, MA, beginning Thursday night (pregame 6:30 p.m., first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.), when the #3 seed Jumbos take on #4 Brandeis. The Jumbos will play a second game on Friday — at either 3:30 p.m. or at 7 p.m., depending on how they fare on Thursday night.

For more information on the tournament, see the ECAC press release or the NCAA Championships site.

Thursday, April 18, 2002

The spring 2002 schedule is ready — we will be starting with the April 19 Tufts baseball game against Trinity. We're excited to be presenting live broadcasts of Tufts spring sports for the first time in many, many years (and quite likely, ever). As always during this pilot period, hang with us if we run into any technical problems, as we try and bring you as much Tufts spring sports action as we can!

Okay, So I Should Have Said, 'The Ill-Advised, Ill-Prepared Leap That Actually Went Backward'

Well, if you tried to access the live webcast of Tuesday night's game, or wound up communicating with me via Instant Messenger, you know the whole thing was a catastrophic failure. I'm disappointed and embarrassed — it's the first time in twelve years that I've travelled to a game and not been able to broadcast some of it live. I can summarize it as unexpected network issues and hubris; if you want more info than that, you can click the link. I did capture video (and audio) of the second half; that has finally made it to the archive page. Be warned, however, that this is the work of someone who was a) calling the game, b) running the video camera and, most-time-consumingly, c) giving live score updates via IM. And doing none of the three particularly well. Ah, well. Again, my apologies. It can only get better from here...

The Great, Brave Leap Forward

Well, we're going to try to broadcast video of tonight's NESCAC Men's Basketball Tournament first-round game between Tufts and Williams (note the revised tip-off time of 8 p.m.). Video is really uncharted waters for us (and we will be taking the minimalist approach with just one camera), so we ask you all to please bear with us if anything goes awry. We're hoping that no matter what, you will be able to hear the game well, even if you can't see it. As always, if you use AOL Instant Messenger, you can IM us at 'jumbocast' and tell us what you see (or don't).

You will probably have difficulty seeing clear, continuous video if you are connected via a 56Kbps modem; Real does its best to compress the video down all teeny-tiny-like so that it can travel through the lower bandwidth to a regular phone-line modem, but it may not work well enough to be satisfying. But hey, go ahead and try it anyway — we'd love to know if it looks passable on a 56K modem.

One last note: the Tufts RealServer that we are using does have a maximum number of streams that it supports (it's somewhere between 60-90). If you have problems accessing JumboCast's stream tonight, we will be simulcasting on Tufts Community Radio WMFO (91.5 FM); you can listen by regular radio if you're within reception range, or you can listen to 'MFO over the web (this is getting kinda complicated; it's a webcast of a radio transmission of a webcast!) by going here.

Enjoy the game!

Thursday, January 17, 2002

We're getting ready to start our "beta" phase on Saturday (see the schedule), where we publicize the site and our webcasts, stress-test the infrastructure, and generally try to work out all the bugs as quickly as we can. We did a "dress-rehearsal" broadcast of Tufts men's basketball on Tuesday night, which was a little slow to get going (strictly from the 'audio quality' perspective, mind you — the broadcasters and the Jumbos both did a splendid job). It's archived in the archive section.

If you want to try and access one of the streams — either live or archived — make sure you have visited the setup page, and verified that you have all the appropriate software.

We'll be publicizing this more over the next few weeks, but keep in mind — we'd love to have you help us! Check the contribute section to see more.

Thanks go out to the following folks for helping us get off the ground:
  • Todd Bloniarz
  • Brad Feldman
  • Bill Gehling
  • Neal Hirsig
  • Jim McHugh
  • Aaron Read
  • Paul Sweeney
Special thanks, as always, to Kristen Clay.
